Thanks to John Hopkins at the Live Oak Ranch for this GREAT Oryx hunt. John hosted me early this spring at his wonderful ranch just west of Uvalde Texas. The weather was warm, but the animals were still moving. We stalked a great Gold Metal Oryx and left with a great trophy.

Grizzlies...Way too Close for Comfort |

What started off as a typical spot and stalk on a logging road in Central British Columbia for grizzly bear, ended up almost getting myself, Hugh Coates and guide, Jordy McAuley, in trouble. We had seen some nice bears off an old logging road the day before, so we headed back a few hours before dark. We parked the truck, moved up the gravel road and started glassing the mountains. As the sun began to set, a large grizzly poked its head out of the thick brush just above our position (and within 30 yards or so). Moments later, another grizzly crossed the road between us and the truck. Following this, a large boar let out a growl that literally eccoed between the mountains. So now, we have grizzleys above, below and between us and the truck. Now I have hunted black bears on numerous occasion and have had some close calls, including a couple that tried to sit in my tree stand with me. But I have never been that concerned.
The grizzly is different.... they attack to kill.
Coates and I were getting pretty worried (to say the least), but our veteran bear guide, Jordy, was calm, cool and collected. By this time the sun was falling out of the sky and we needed to get back to the truck. We didn't want to move since we could hear the bear that crossed the shuffling around just 75 yards ahead of us. That plan came to a screeching halt when a mother and her two grown cubs (about 150 pounds each) started racing towards us down the road. They had us surrounded!
Jordy grabbed me and pushed me towards the truck. Not seeing us moving out, Coates stopped to look back at the cubs. They were closing fast. I ran back, grabbed Coates and off we quickly walked down the road. About 25 yards into our race to the truck, the grizzly on the side of the road jumped in front of us. I pulled up my 300 Win Mag shot. The bear rolled and started across the road. I shot again, missed, shot again and hit another solid shot. Luckily, all of the artillery noise stopped the mother and the cubs and it appeared we were out of danger. I raced back to the truck, we loaded the bear as quickly as possible and got the heck out of there.
The adreniline was pumping that night and only after looking back did Coates and I realize just how much danger we were in.

The American Outdoorsman headed to Central Florida to hunt Monster Gators! We hunted on the largest ranch in the state that is host to over 40,000 head of cattle. These huge, bull gators were coming out of the swamps and snatching baby calves. Myself and hunting partner, Denny Wyssbrod, took down 2 eleven footers!

The AO Crew, Jay Wardrip, Chris Higgins and Hugh Coates headed to Central Alberta for a 2007 spring bear hunt. With Higgins running the camera in my tree stand, we saw 11 bears the first night, including a great boar right at dusk... He came, I drew back my bow and WAM! We got him! In addition to our crew, Homero "The Mad Mexican" Garcia joined us from Houston, Texas. Homero saw and then killed his first bear and boy was he excited!
